Shekhar Mehta is instrumental in starting the Healing Little Hearts Program. The program has been formulated and designed to ease the suffering and give a normal life to children suffering from congenital heart diseases. He also facilitated for the program to now become a National Program.
Among the children in need for urgent medical treatment , majority need immediate surgery to stay alive. A surgery costs anywhere between 1,00,000 to 2,50,000 INR ; and unfortunately the cases are among those children who are below poverty line with their parents generally earning 3000 INR monthly on an average.
Through the Healing Little Hearts program, Mehta has been directly involved in 2500 paedriatic heart surgeries, while across India , Rotary Clubs would have done around 20,000 surgeries for poor children coming from across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and African countries.
Delighted, he shares that his home club, RC Calcutta Mahanagar’s endeavoured to take up heart surgeries of three Afghan children, while another child from Africa is waiting for the same. It is indeed a gratifying act of service.
