Shekhar Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of Shelter Box, UK. Shekhar Mehta was instrumental in introducing the Shelter Kit in India. The Shelter Kit program was started by Mr. Shekhar Mehta in 2005 when the Bihar Flood had occurred. These were initially referred to as the “ Ghar Aapsi Kit”. Shelter Kits are basically trunks containing 52 essential items which any disaster struck family would need. It comes as an immediate blessing to the disaster struck family.
Shelter Kits are comprehensive relief kits containing 52 items, which a family may need in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Whether it was in flood ravaged Bihar, Kerela and Uttarakhand or Nepal and Kashmir crumbling under a devastating earthquake, immediate relief was provided to thousands of disaster victims through Shelter Kit, helping them to restart their lives.
Pioneering the dream Project, Shekhar Mehta personally supervised the selection of the items, preparation of the kits, dispatch schedules and at most of the times their distribution also. Over the years, the Shelter Kits have become extremely popular and the need of every Disaster, whether it be a cloudburst, an earthquake or any other. Upon the occurrence of any disaster, the Shelter Kits were dispatched as an early disaster material to reach the disaster victims as a priority.
The Shelter Kit Program served about 20 disasters, distributing more than 15,000 Shelter Kits helping about 75,000 disaster victims.Over the past 15 years , about 10,000 Shelter Kits have been distributed benefitting more than 50,000 people across the length and breadth of India.
